Gering, Nebraska

The Automated Horn System (AHS) was installed at three crossings in Gering, 7th Street, 10th Street, and Country Club Road. To date there have been no grade crossing accidents since the installation of the AHS. There has been minimal maintenance. The AHS was installed using 50% state funds and 50% railroad funds. The Gering installations were studied extensively by the Volpe Center, which produced a report for the FRA. The study found that upon evaluation of motorist behavior, AHS would not result in behavior that puts the driver at increased risk compared to the use of the train horn. This report may be viewed on the research portion of this web site. If you have any questions regarding the installations in Gering, you may contact Mr. Gary Fresorger, Electrical Supervisor with the City of Gering, he may be reached at (308) 436-5096.
