Ames, Iowa
The Automated Horn System was installed at Hazel Avenue, Scholl Road and North Dakota Street in October of 1998 with three additional installations installed at Kellogg Avenue, Duff Avenue and Clark Avenue in October of 2000. The local government funded these installations. Following the installation of the AHS there have been no grade crossing accidents at these locations. The original Ames installations were studied extensively by both the City of Ames and the Iowa DOT. The Iowa DOT's report can be viewed online by going to the research section of this web page. The Iowa DOT surveyed motorists using the Ames crossings and determined that 91% believe the Automated Horn System provided warning at least equivalent to the train's horn. A survey of the locomotive engineer's revealed that 92% of the engineer's felt that the Automated Horn System was as safe or safer than then train's horn. The City of Ames surveyed the residents and found that 91% said the Automated Horn System improved their quality of life. Before the installation of the Automated Horn System 84% of the residents indicated that the train horn was a problem. If you have any questions about the Ames installations you may contact Mr. Ken Lang with the City of Ames. He can be reached at (515) 239-5535.
